This project was started in 2006 or 2007 and then put into storage for almost a decade. I've decided I'm going to try and finish up a few projects to be entered in the MCMA Showdown in March in Irving, Texas. The kit chassis was hacked up extensively. I used the chassis pan, firewall, and the "bottom" of the left and right chassis pieces. Here are the front bars all built from styrene stock Here is the "green house" area all built up, you can also see the beginning of the front bumper bar. More of the front bumper bars, though I think they changed a good bit after this pic was taken. Version #2 of the front bumper. This is after it was pulled out of storage and I began working on it again. Here you can see hood hinges, the support structure on the bottom side of the hood Body getting cleaned up and hood hinges drilled. I realized after drilling the holes that he molded in hood hinges were too high on the hood. After this the holes were filled with styrene rod and then puttied and sanded until they disappeared and new holes drilled closer to the leading edge of the hood. Paint on the chassis and body. First coat of clear, It took quite a bit of work to get it cleaned up from this point. I was very unhappy with the first coat of Omni clear. This was my first clear coat job in 7 or 8 years. Decals on. The clear was sanded out, re-shot, and then polished. I will clear after I finish the decals. You can see a little bleed through on the numbers. I ruined the red bow tie that goes on the front of the hood/top of the bumper, so I've decided I'll pick up a second set of decals and double up the white parts so that they are more opaque.

Some chassis detailing started. Roll bar padding done with heat shrink tubing and a little detail painting. Working on the headers. Solder, bent to shape, and a collector from heat shrink tubing. Painted with alclad aluminum, Model Master Metallizers, and Tamiya Clears. The shocks in this picture will get re-built. I'm not 100% happy with them. I picked up various parts from Dirt Modeller and plan to try out their PE rod ends. Engine set in the chassis to see how it is looking. I'm not 100% happy with the placement of the FedEx on the hood. It seems like it is sitting too high from the reference photos I've seen/found. In the photos it appears that the decal is completely on the hood, however, due to the slight taper towards the nose, this was as low as I could set it without trying to cut it and bleed it onto the fenders. A little more engine bay detailing. Engine details being added. Pro Tech fittings, Ted's Modelling Marketplace brass ferules to mimic the compression fittings. This is where I started contemplating using the kit pulleys. I've since hit the spare parts box looking for pulleys that are a bit more realistic and that I am happy with. Trying to save the $$$ of buying an aluminum set up.

Side shot of the engine. All of the blue fittings will need touched up before installation. My plumbing may not be 100% correct, I'm hoping none of the judges are experts and that I am the only super detailed NASCAR build there... Cooling tunnel is in for the radiator. I need to create a top for it still. This was done with embossing metal. It gives the right look, allows for "embossed" details, and is easy to work with. I believe it was at this point that I had made a couple of errors. I should have either A. used one size smaller braided line/fittings on both the fuel and oil lines, or laid out the oil lines with the engine in the chassis. I've had to re-think and "wing" the oil line set up to clear the engine mounts. Ideally, I should have gone with a motor plate mount type set up and shaved off the risers for the engine mount and that would have eliminated the issue. Some radiator detailing. E-fan wires and connector, upper hose and fitting done. Rear wedge bolt tubes started. They may need tweaked a bit once the body goes on. Distributor is in and wired (firing order is not correct!). Notice the loose oil line. This is a result of the way the engine mounts in the chassis. I will have to connect that line once the engine is in for good. Everything is EXTREMELY tight in there and takes some work to get the engine to sit in place. Almost ready to be mounted!

Thank you. This is my first super detail build with "proper" materials. There are a few things I would/will do differently next time.

Honestly, I attribute most of the wow factor to having the budget to be able to purchase high quality detail parts!

A few small updates on this thing. I'm starting to get the feeling I may not finish before the show the first weekend in march :/ Remote oil filter set up is done. Roughly 7 pieces total in this, including the filter. Crank and water pump pullies complete Reference used for the pullies. I'm hoping to have the engine in permanently by the end of the weekend. I need to sort out mounting the PS pump, find and detail an alternator and mount it, route the belts, and it should be ready. I am currently on the fence regarding the oil scavenge lines for the valve covers.

Finally, the engine sits in place! I am having to move the oil filter assembly, as it was interfering with everything. Still a long way to go, but I reached a milestone.
