Ok, so I was moving along with my 1980 Petty builds when I've hit a snag. I can't clean the bodies I bought from Kdog well enough to hold paint. The first paint looked great, until I taped the bodies for the Petty blue when the masking tape pulled the paint back down to the bare resin. I had soaked them overnight in Bleche-Wite, then washed them with Super Clean, and let air dry. I dropped them in the purple bath to start over and soaked them for 2 days in Bleche-Wite, then washed with soap and water, and let air dry. I started with the primer (Rustoleum filling primer) but before going any further, I tried the primer with masking tape. Peeled the primer off in a single sheet.
The bodies have a strange glossy sheen to them that several days of soaking hasn't removed. Is there anything that might help?

Try scuffing then with some sand paper. I usually use a more aggressive grit like 220, then follow up with a 1400

Id take a scotch brite pad....gray color and scrub it with a soapy solution. you can soak it for months and the sheen wont go away...it needs to sanded of scuffed. Paint needs a mechanical grip over a chemical grip on resin because of its hardness. plastic kits are soft to where a chemical will bond easily. If you use sand paper you have to be careful not to sand the body lines...door handle etc off. I like scotch brite pads

I use Dawn soap. Just wash the part like you would your dishes. Seems to work very well. Never had an issue useing it when I paint.

Ok, I think I'm back on track. I stripped the bodies again and tried everything suggested. No dice, the primer still pulled off with masking tape. I finally just hit the bodies with sandpaper, starting at 400 grit and working up to 1000 grit and the primer is holding on now. Back to it this weekend, more Petty paint shop work.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
