Again thank you for accepting my membership. A little about me. I'm a pre senior citizen at 55 years old. My favorite hobby as a kid was putting models together. Airplanes, tanks, semi tractors, and some cars. For some reason after high school I lost interest in it. Maybe it was the girls, running around with the guys that caused it, lol. Then came marraige, work and the day to day grind of life. Last summer I was organizing my basement and found a couple of nascar kits that I started back in the 80s. It was the only two kits I kept along with a 1/8 scale Monogram Trans Am. The rest of my stuff ended up in the trash after multiple moves over the years. I didn't start following Nascar till around 94. So why I bought the kits is a mystery. Maybe it was the cool box art when I saw them in the store. The two kits consisted of Monogram 85 Harry Gants Skoal Bandit and Ron Bouchard Valvoline Monte Carlos. I just remembered I have the Monogram Bill Ellliot Coors car too. Anyhow it sparked my interest in building models again. I started out with afv armour models circa World War 2 until a couple of months ago. I pulled the Gant model box off the shelf and decided to restore or finish the kit. It looked simple because of the few parts compared to todays model tank kits. I'm used to working with 500 to 1000 piece kits. This should be a snap! Boy was I wrong!! The fit on these monogram kits is poor at best compared to the new stuff out there. And trying to get the perfect paint job on a car is alot harder than on military tank. I'm used to working with acrylics because of the ease and no smell. Laquer and Enamel paints are new to me and using in a airbrush is an adventure for me. I'm still learning and hopefully I'll conquer those paints some day.
As I mentioned before, I started following Nascar around 94. Terry Labonte became my favorite driver of all time. I always liked how he carried himself. He wasn't the type of guy who said, "Look at me. Look how great I am!" He was quiet and let his racing do the talking. I never saw him loose his cool. He might have but I never saw it. Todays drivers I'd have to go with Kasey Kahne. I see he hung it up this past year. He had the same personality as Terry.
My goal here is to gather tips and tricks to turning out a great model and buy some decals off Stoney. He has alot of obscure Terry Labonte decals listed and I'd like to finish off my collection of diecast Labonte cars with making my own cars of the ones the diecast and model manufacturers never made. I already have a list started. My second goal is to make every championship car starting at 1980 till present. I've managed to collect kits, donor kits, and decals up to 2005 so far. I've completed my first kit a couple of weeks ago of the 1983 Bobby Allison Miller High Life Buick. For a first try it turned out ok.
Thanks for reading my long bio and I look forward to meeting you guys.
