Don't know the reason for the gold wheel but he did use it to qualify. Whatever you qualified on in what you had to start the Twin 125 on. He didn't start the Five Hundred with a gold wheel.

Just a guess about the gold wheels. That might of been the year they were switching back and forth between Goodyear and Hoosier.. I noticed no tire decal on the fender. The gold wheels was what was available to the #3 at that moment from Hoosier.
Just a theory ?
