Even though this build has literally been years in the making (research-wise), I've managed to not get banned nor kicked in the balls and left to die in a fire, so I guess it's not all that significant, but I'll still post it. This is one of two customs that I'm taking down to Batesville for Mark Martin Fan Days. It's the sister to the Apache Stove hauler that Mark ran in the early 80's. Actually, they were the same vehicle, just repainted. And it isn't really a hauler, but I currently lack a better term, so it's a hauler. It's been on my "need to find good reference material" list forever, and I was lucky enough to hook-up with Ryan Finley (son of Dennis Finley... who hand painted all of Mark's cars in those days) and he had a photo that was decent enough for me to reconstruct the decals. The cab is an 1:24 AMT Mack Model R685ST and everything behind the doors is scratchbuilt and my decals. The airfoil was formed by melting a sheet of styrene over a sculpted wooden block that I had saved from the Apache Stove build. Then some sanding and Squadron White Putty, sanding, etc. I really enjoy taking one-off builds to Fan Days, especially the obscure. Since finding a reference photo was such a challenge, and the fact that I've never seen one built before... I place it firmly in the obscure category. These were the reference photos: And this is the end result. I'll post better pics to my site after it's autographed. Thanks for looking. M

Thanks for the positive feedback. I do appreciate it. I've said it before, and I'll say it again... I've found that the thrill of the hunt is slowly shifting from finding that holy grail item for my collection to uncovering those illusive references that allow me to piece together a project. Each completed build is rewarding in itself, but it's so much more meaningful when it's the result of some actual digging.

That's how I felt tracking down the Dale Sr California Cooler car.

Man, this is awesome. Extra kudos for the scratch building and decal work. It all turned out really nice. I think reusing the buck to do the deflector was the way to go. Maybe next time.
You have to let us know how it goes when you show it to Mark and the guys.
