One would think that after quite a few customs (15?), the process would get easier. Unfortunately not for me. I run across the same problems , build after build, and after reading lots of answers and suggestions (from posted threads) I get nowhere. I use quality supplies (primer, paint, tape, decals, etc) but before the build is complete, I've either started over multiple times, or have issues when I'm at the point of NO RETURN, so I continue with the attitude of..... "its gonna have to be good enough". Now I'm not talking about absolute perfect diecast, but rather rookie stuff(mistakes?)! Heres what I do and the problems I run across ALL THE TIME, so any input would be appreciated..... (constructive criticism only)---- be nice:
Let me start by saying that YES, I'm familiar with humidity, clean dry diecast, etc and how this affects everything:
1. Apply primer, then wait a few days.
2. Apply mutiple (light/med) coats of paint, then wait a few days.
3. Apply tape- push down fairly hard to avoid paint bleed. Paint 2nd color (multiple coats if necessary).
Now.... I like to remove tape before 2nd color is dry but when I do, tape pulls up EVERYTHING, incl primer! Back down to bare metal. Thats problem #1.
4. Problem #2.....What do you guy do for roof flap painting/decaling? Once diecast is taken apart, how do you apply decals over working flaps, so that decal looks seamless? I try and partially assemble this area, but you cant really install the plastic underside insert (ACTION diecast) at this point (can you?), but decals want to slide around and wont stay still for me to cut. Edges are always terrible and decals are sooooo small that it is next to impossible for them to stay in 1 place until dry. I do use micro sol, micro set for everything BTW.
If I have made it to this point, sometimes I see the light at the end, but I no better. Everything is complete and a couple coats of clear are applied. I go to reassemble after a week or 2. I always have issues with the hood and deck lids not closing all the way or chipping paint once I close them. Either that or the clear coat is "soft" and sticks to the body paint..... and whalla: paint chips up again. Am I putting too heavy of coats of paint/clear on?? How can you NOT get a thick bed if you are applying multiple coats of paint under mutiple coats of clear? I have purchased some customs and they look and feel NOTHING like mine and look perfect! Frustrating is not the word I look for but for my efforts, my customs should turn out ALOT better than they do. I want to continue to build so please feel free to take me to school..... before I pull the plug!
